Café 8 is a social enterprise founded by The Nesbitt Centre, a non-profit organisation that provides educational programmes and employment opportunities for adults with learning difficulties and related disabilities. The largest of four such operations run by the organisation, Café 8 provides its staff with all the training they need to acquire crucial life skills, such as communication skills and working with others. It offers the chance to work as part of a supportive and inclusive team, while building each individual’s confidence and developing their self-esteem. According to Acting Manager Melody De Leon, Café 8 employ a total of 21 staff, 60% of which have learning disabilities. Ms. De Leon and her team play a key role in providing guidance, helping staff navigate social interactions, and address challenges with patience and understanding. Having worked for the organisation for over 5 years, it’s clear to see Ms. De Leon has developed a very strong bond with her team. “I never worked with people with learning difficulties before joining Café 8,” she says, “and in the beginning I found it very tough, as I was faced with a new and unfamiliar set of challenges. But I came to realise that by treating our staff with the love and respect they deserve, we can really help to make a difference to their lives.”

The atmosphere within Café 8 is very friendly and welcoming and staff retention is high, which is testament to the support network the organisation provides, and evidence of the positive impact such opportunities have on the growth and development of their staff. “I like working here as I can help with serving, washing and cleaning,” says Terence, who joined Café 8 back in 2016. Staff are assigned duties according to their abilities, providing a safe environment to develop their skills and independence at their own pace. Shawn - who joined last June - tells us, “I like to work here, it’s very nice! I make lots of friends here and have lots of things to do!” Comments from others are similarly positive. Aside from supporting an inspiring cause, there are plenty of other reasons to stop by Café 8, whether you’re day tripping on the islands, passing on your daily commute or visiting the excellent Maritime Museum. The bright, modern interior is a perfect place to relax with a coffee and a good book, while the rooftop patio offers sweeping views of Victoria Harbour, the Observation Wheel and HK’s famous skyline in every direction. When the sun’s out, it’s hard to think of a better spot on HK island to enjoy a lazy lunch. The straightforward menu includes freshly prepared sandwiches, wraps, salads and pies, alongside a delicious cake selection, courtesy of Café 8’s sister-enterprise, The Nest Bakery. They also boast an extensive selection of drinks, including teas and coffees, fresh juices, beers and wines (or try their free herb-infused water, with fresh herbs picked from the rooftop patio herb garden). With so much to choose from, the great value set lunches come highly recommended. Covid restrictions notwithstanding, Cafe 8 is also available to hire for weddings and other private events, catering for up to 100 people; contact them for more information about their food and drink packages.
